My name is Patti Wavinak and I am the proud new owner of PlanetObama. My cousin, LaVonne, was the original owner and she did a good job of keeping it up-to-date. However, she has become involved in other things (such as starting her own business – yeah!). When I learned that she was going to give this domain away I immediately contacted her. There was no way that I wanted this site to fall into the “wrong hands”, if you know what I mean, plus I have an enormous respect for our President Barack Obama and want to keep the public abreast of all the good that he has done and continues to do.

Let me tell you a little about myself. I run a blog called My World Of Soaps – I’ve been hooked on a few . Let’s face it, politics are very similar to Soap Opera’s with all the scandals that have happened over the years. I reside the very Republican state of Texas so my enthusiasm for our President definitely leaves me in the minority – but that does not deter me to shout his praises.

I was very involved in helping then Senator Obama win the 2008 election. I donated time and money, wrote letters, and made hundreds of phone calls. I guess my efforts were noticed by Obama’s election committee as I was delighted, thrilled, and shocked when I received an invitation to his Inauguration!. Unfortunately, I could not attend but I do have the invitation framed and displayed proudly on my entertainment center.

I am so looking forward to helping President Obama get re-elected in 2012. I am looking forward to his State of Union on Tuesday, January 25th. Of course, I will be be giving you an update on that – along with my thoughts.

Please feel free to comment on any, and all, of my posts. You can also contact me at moonbrrz@gmail.com and you can follow me on Twitter @myworldofsoaps.

President Obama signed a Presidential Memorandum launching the America’s Great Outdoors Initiative today, which focuses on promoting community-level efforts to conserve outdoor spaces. As part of the initiative, members of the administration will host regional sessions with groups and individuals across the country to discuss ideas on how to protect America’s natural landscape and form a 21st century strategy conservation agenda. The President said that the initiative is not a “big federal agenda being driven out of Washington,” but an effort to collect the best ideas on conservation that local communities support and reconnect Americans to the outdoors. He explained that the initiative will build on successful conservation efforts being lead by local and state governments, tribes, and private groups, while helping farmers, ranchers, and property owners to protect their lands. The outdoors initiative will also help families spend more time outdoors by building on the First Lady’s Let’s Move initiative. America’s Great Outdoors Initiative will be lead by the Secretaries of the Interior and Agriculture, the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Chair of the Council of Environmental Quality. The American Opportunity Tax Credit alleviates up to $2,500 of federal income tax owed for individuals paying for college loans and making up to $90,000 a year or for couples making up to $180,000. This is just one of the many ways this Administration is giving back to students. The Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010 ended wasteful subsidies to banks and freed up nearly $68 billion dollars for college affordability and deficit reduction. Over the next 10 years, the Act will make important investments in higher education, help make college more affordable for hardworking Americans and give back to the American tax payer by: Expanding the Pell Grant program by $36 billion. Investing $750 million to bolster college access for students over the next 5 years.

The President declared that he is “100 percent committed to the mission of NASA and its future,” and laid out steps and investments that the Administration is making towards space exploration. He announced a $6 billion increase in NASA’s budget over the next five years, focusing on making cuts elsewhere as the government instituted a freeze on discretionary spending. The President explained that the Administration will extend the life of the International Space Station by more than five years in order to conduct research that will help improve our daily lives while working with the private sector to make reaching space more affordable. He also announced a $3 billion investment into developing an advanced “heavy lift rocket,” aiming to finalize the design for the rocket by 2015.
Over the past year and throughout my career, I've visited communities hit by natural disasters across the country and spoken with a number of Americans dealing with the aftermath of terrorist attacks. What always strikes me about the days and months that follow these tragedies is the resilience that emerges in the communities that are affected. The recovery in New York after 9/11, in New Orleans after Katrina, and in Greensburg, Kansas after the devastating tornado in 2007 all demonstrate the extraordinary ability of citizens to come together after disasters to rebuild stronger than before. This resilience displayed by individual American citizens persists long after the cameras are gone, and it's every bit as important to our security as the government's immediate response. Tonight, I'll be speaking at the Kennedy School of Government about the Department of Homeland Security's approach to confronting the new and evolving threats we face – from terrorism and violent extremism to cyber attacks and natural disasters. The public deserves a candid assessment of the threats America faces. And that includes talking about the shared responsibility for securing our nation. The federal government cannot prepare for, respond to, and recover from major crises on its own. Our ability to effectively prevent, disrupt and respond to terrorist attacks, violent extremism, and other major disasters relies upon Americans working together – preparing emergency plans, notifying law enforcement when we see something suspicious, and helping our fellow citizens rebuild when disasters do strike. As President Obama has said, and the experiences of New York, New Orleans, and Greensburg have shown, in confronting threats, the American people are the source of our greatest strength. I hope you'll watch the address at the Kennedy School Forum tonight, and learn more about how we can all take steps to be more informed, ready, and resilient.
